Look at how cute this snake is! Together with your preschool child, create this slippery snake when you make my Uppercase Letter S Craft. Your student will review the shape and sound of S as he or she makes a snake craft.
Snakes are the perfect animal to help your student learn the letter S because their bodies can actually make the letter, and many snakes even make an “s” sound as they slither along.
Each time you say the word “snake”, emphasize the letter sound at the beginning of the word. Trace the letter S in the air or on the table with your child randomly throughout the day. Use window markers to draw the Letter S on a bathroom mirror or windows around your home. These markers wipe write off with a wet towel and are so much fun!
Take your Letter S learning even further with snake-themed activities that teach different subjects or skills. Try some of our extra snake activities for more chances to practice the shape and sound of S throughout your week.
In our Lowercase Letter S Craft we talk about how great yoga is to get little muscles warmed up and ready for the hard work of sitting and learning. The snake is such a fun animal to mimic in exercise! Not to mention, the snake actually seems to make the s sound as it slithers along. Try these variations on the snake pose from Children Inspired by Yoga.
Nothing says “fun mom” like thematic food to go with the theme of the week. I found this adorable snake pizza made from store bought bread dough and thought that looked like the perfect lunch while working on learning the letter S.
Reading picture books out loud is one of the best ways to help your preschool child academically. Consult our list of Letter S Books for preschool for a great list of snake picture books.
I especially love the book called Snakes by Gail Gibbons. Ms. Gibbons presents factual information with vivid imagery to inspire children. If your child isn’t ready for the text in these books, just read the first sentence on each page and study the pictures together.
You can also spend some time looking for evidence of snakes in your back yard or a nearby park. Look for snake skins, or snake marks in sand. Talk to park rangers to find out what kinds of snakes are native to your area. If you have a nature park or zoo nearby with snakes in habitats, this would be a great chance to visit and observe living snakes in a controlled environment.
Sometimes toys can inspire your child where books and activities have not. Sometimes you will not even realize how closely a young child is listening to a story until you hear them act out the story later through play. Try some of these fun snake toys to help teach the sound and shape of S.
