A moose is a majestic animal perfect to be the star of your home as you study the letter m. Your student will transform the letter into a moose in this uppercase letter m craft for preschool while learning the shape and sound of M.
Letter crafts are a great way to help your student remember the shape of a letter because it creates a picture in your child’s mind. The trick is to make sure the name and sound of the letter are associated with the picture. As you make the craft, repeat the name and sound of the letter a few times together to review. Be sure to check out our lowercase letter m craft as well!
One of the wonderful things about using themes to direct learning is this. You can add as much or as little as you want. A preschool child doesn’t need to meet certain learning minimums nearly as much as they need to play and be active as much as possible. When you can combine learning with play it’s a win for everyone! However, as mom, you need to have healthy boundaries related to time and energy expended. No need to burn out while your child is in preschool.
I just want you to know that when I provide a list of extension activities, you are never expected to do them all. Pick and choose the ones that are easy to implement, fit well with your lifestyle, and match with your child’s personality. Have fun with it, and stop when you aren’t having fun. Please do not get overwhelmed. If you have to choose between something that provides exercise and something that provides academics, choose exercise! Academics can come later. Any one of these activities will set up the uppercase letter m craft perfectly.
Moose on the Loose by Kathy-Jo Wargen. If I had to pick just one, this hilarious book about what happens when a moose escapes the wild would be my moose book of choice.
A fantastic list of moose books to read is included in our Letter M Books List along with picture books about mice, and moon stories.
As you share this majestic moose craft with your child, make sure to let the student do as much of the work as possible. It’s so tempting to do the work for them! The goal here is not perfection, it’s getting kids to cut and paste and learn while improving fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination at the same time. When the craft is finished be sure to show it off with a magnet on the fridge, painter’s tape to hang it on a window or door in your home (where the paint is less likely to be damaged), or in a special book where you keep each letter craft.
