Z is such a fun letter! One of my favorite Z words is zigzag, and there is so much you can do with that, including our fun ZigZag Craft. Have your child make this Lowercase Letter Z Craft using construction paper, scissors, and glue, and review the shape and sound of Z.
Your child will get valuable scissor practice with today’s craft! Cutting the zigzag shapes from construction paper is excellent scissor work. Scissor work helps children build hand strength, improves fine motor movement, and increases hand-eye coordination.
In addition to the Lowercase Letter Z Craft, you can try using any of the other methods in this post to help your child learn the shape and sound of Z. Have fun with this! These letter activities can be low-key and fun but still very effective.
We have a fantastic list of Letter Z Picture Books you can read with your student. You’ll even find three fun books about the zigzag on that list!
It’s kind of fun that the letter Z actually resembles the zigzag. Play an indoor or outdoor game called the zigzag game to get your kids up and moving and thinking about the letter Z. Places cones or plastic cups about three feet apart in two columns. Have your child run from one side to the next, zigzagging between the cones. If you have more than one child you can set up two courses and have them compete, or just have them take turns, or make it a relay.
The letter Z is super hard to find because it is rare and therefore extremely special. You can plant objects that begin with the letter Z around your home for your child to find. Do this by either making flashcards from images found online or gathering up toys and objects you have around the house like plastic zebras, zippers, zoo toys, etc.
Make Zebra Pretzel Wands for fun!

If you have enough plastic zoo animals, have your child make the letter Z from the animals. You can also use found objects outside (like rocks or sticks) to make the letter Z, or just use sidewalk chalk. While you are at it, you can also have your student make zigzags in the same way. Drawing big zigzags on the driveway with sidewalk chalk would be an awesome activity to build core strength and gross motor skills.
Once you have all of the supplies you need gathered up and on the crafting table, pick one or more of these activities to introduce the craft. For each of these activities, you should emphasize the sound of z as you say Z words, and point out the shape of Z on the pages of books.
