Your preschool child can make an adorable spider in this Lowercase Letter S Craft using construction paper and pipe cleaners. In fact, why not have an S-Themed week learning all about the letter S with ideas for every subject. We are including spider activities to go with this craft and you can also find extra letter s activities in our Uppercase Letter S Craft.
I love how cute this spider craft turned out! By simply adding pipe cleaners and googly eyes to the letter S, you can help your child learn the shape and sound of S and prepare for reading success. Before or after you finish the craft, try one of our extension activities for spiders and keep the learning going.
As you work through these extra activities remember to review the sound of S and trace the shape of S each time to make sure you are still learning about the letter. Extra activities are just that – extra. Pick one or two but don’t feel you have to do them all.
Go on a search for spiders and spider webs together. Right after a rain or in the morning while the grass is still wet with dew is the perfect time to find a spider’s web. Turn over rocks, look under logs, or pick up outdoor rugs to see if you can find spiders there. You don’t have to touch spiders to see what they look like.
Before you make the lowercase letter s craft, learn all about spiders using the book Spiders! By Gail Gibbons. If the text is too much to read in one sitting with your preschool student, read one page a day and talk about it. Or had just the first sentence on each page to make it simpler.
Spiders have eight legs and you can use this to your advantage for math activities! Skip count by two’s and four’s to count the spider legs. Get plastic spiders to count and group. Use your plastic spiders to teach one-to-one correspondence using ten frames or other counting worksheets.
If you’ve never sung the Itsy Bitsy Spider song together, you are in for a treat! Watch different versions on YouTube and have fun with this.
The Itsy Bitsy Spider went up the water spout.
Down Came the Rain and Washed the Spider Out.
Up came the Sun and dried up all the Rain and
The Itsy Bitsy Spider Climbed up the spout again.
