Have you noticed that preschool kids love ladybugs? Something about these bugs is incredibly special to kids. In our lowercase letter l craft for preschoolers this week your student will transform the letter into an adorable ladybug, while learning about the sound and shape of l.
One of the most important things you can do is make learning relevant to your child’s world through real-life experiences. As I mentioned in my letter L book list, you can actually take your preschooler out to hunt for ladybugs in the Spring and Summer. If you poke around in a clump of weeds, a patch of clover, or around the trunks of trees, chances are good you will find a bunch of ladybugs.
Kids love to play with ladybugs! Teach them to be gentle and let them be observant little naturalists learning about the bug and it’s habitat through play. You can also buy a ladybug habitat and actual larvae so your family can watch ladybugs grow in person. This is a powerful living science lesson about insect life cycles.
I like to encourage extension activities to go with our letter crafts. I didn’t find much to go with ladybugs, but I love these ideas. Kids Yoga stories has a ladybug pose. Yoga is perfect to slip some non-threatening physical activity into your child’s day and build gross motor skills. If you want to go all out, make this ladybug fruit cup. It’s a quick and easy snack that will make your child’s day.
Puzzles like this are a great way to work on fine motor skills. I thought this ladybug counting set was pretty cool too.
The bright red and black colors of a ladybug are so intense, I think it’s one of the reasons kids love them so much. Spend a few minutes at the start of this craft showing your kids the stark contrast between black and red and talking about colors that contrast. It’s an extra little learning opportunity.
If you don’t have time to do anything else today, don’t stress. Just make the lowercase letter L craft with your child and talk about the sound of letter l together. You won’t need much in the way of supplies and if you’ve been keeping up with our letter crafts it’s probably stuff you already have on hand. Here’s the list.
The older your child is the more of each craft she can do on her own. Please give your child the scissors and the reigns. Children take so much pride in doing their own work and it’s an important developmental step! I know it will be hard, and it won’t be perfect. But it will be good for the student!
