Jesters bring a smile to every face and so will this jester craft. Your student will transform the letter j into a jester with this lowercase letter j craft for preschool, and learn the shape and sound of j in the process.
Look at this guy. Doesn’t he make you want to smile! I love that the life purpose of a jester was to make everyone laugh. Laughter is good medicine! I definitely recommend you read the book The Jester Lost his Jingle with your kids. It was the only picture book I could find about jesters, but worth every minute to find.
One of your goals with the lowercase letter J craft is to learn the sound of the letter. You can add simple activities to your day to reinforce the sound of j. These are no-cost or very low-cost activities you can do with what you have around the house. Here are a few ideas.
Write or print the lowercase letter J on fifteen or twenty small pieces of paper, about two inches square. You can cut these pieces from printer paper or old mail. Whatever you have around. While your child is napping or otherwise occupied, hide the letter pieces around a room. It’s like an egg hunt without the eggs. If you’ve already learned the uppercase version you can add that too and match up pairs. Make the sound every time a card is found.
This game is a little different because you are looking for things that begin with J. You could pick one room of the house or go from room to room and play as long as it is fun. In your refrigerator, you might find jelly, jam, and juice. In your pantry you might find jelly beans, jars, and jello snacks. Before you play this game with your child, think it through so you can help steer it in the right direction.
Put a new twist on any game like Uno by adding a jumping rule. Every time you play a red card you have to jump up and down. Something like that. With a little thought, you can add a jumping element to almost any game you play with a preschool child. Don’t forget to emphasize the letter sound! If you want to get some jumping in to work the wiggles out but would also like the easy button for mom (don’t we all!), try this jumping video for kids.
Find a few different snacks already in your pantry: jelly on toast or crackers, juice boxes, juice pops, or jelly beans are perfect. Jello is also great, and you can even cut it into the letter J. If you need to buy something ready to go, grab some cracker jacks or jello cups. I support that! If you want to get really fancy, make some Jester toast.
Set up your supplies and find a few things that begin with the letter J to show your child. A jack-in-the-box would be amazing! Local mom Facebook groups can be a great way to find something like that last minute to borrow in your neighborhood. I also highly recommend the book The Alphabet Room, which has a jester for the letter J and an exciting lift the flap reveal on every page.
The materials list for this craft is a little bit longer than the list for our uppercase letter j craft. I’ll just point out that if you cannot find any kind of red writing utensil because you need it right now, you can just cut a mouth from pink or red paper instead. I could see myself looking for a red marker for hours! Don’t stress about craft supplies if you can improvise.
