Have you ever watched an egg hatch? First the egg starts wiggling, then depending on the animal inside you might see an egg tooth poke through, and eventually little cracks turn into big cracks and a new baby creature emerges. Its really quite exciting to watch! For our lowercase letter e craft, your child is going to help the letter e hatch from it’s egg.
To set up the lowercase letter e craft, I recommend you read some of our letter e books about eggs and watch this video of an egg hatching! For extra fun, put little letter e’s and little objects that start with the letter e into plastic Easter eggs and hide them for your child.
Here are some letter e objects you can find in the playroom or print to hide in the Easter eggs. Only include long-vowel objects if your child is ready to process two different sounds for the letter E.
For the perfect sensory extension activity, create a egg-centered sensory bin for your child to play with while you make lunch or dinner. Fill an old plastic container with cracked and washed egg shells, plastic eggs, the foam or magnet letters, and any other letter e objects you were able to find.
If you are really brave, you can even have your child help crack the eggs! Kids love to help in the kitchen. Use the eggs you’ve cracked to make scrambled eggs for lunch. It turns out you can find quite a few different foods that start with the letter e. I know I was surprised. If you enjoy the extra work, you can serve one or more of these for lunch.
If you want to keep it simple that’s great too. That’s why I have very simple letter crafts and hands-on activities laid out for you. I want you to have easy, manageable activities to teach your child and zero mom guilt!
Cover your table if you like and gather the supplies for the craft activity before you bring your child in to do the work. You might even find that setting up the supplies during naptime makes it more manageable, especially if you have several little ones in your home.
Pro Tip: Go through all of your glue sticks regularly and remove the empty, smashed or non-functional ones so you don’t get caught by surprise when you run out of glue. Ask me how I know.
As you work together on this craft, have your child trace the letter with his fingers and say the name of the letter out loud. Work together to come up with a list of words that start with E. Use the items listed in this post as a springboard for your child if he or she is drawing a blank.
Don’t forget to have your child do as much of the cutting as possible. Trace these shapes ahead of time with a thick marker to make it easier. Before your child glues all the pieces down, your child might like to play with the paper egg a little bit and pretend that the letter e baby is hatching.
Once your child has finished the lowercase letter e craft, praise him or her for working so hard and finishing a really cool project. Hang the finished craft somewhere prominent or take pictures and send them to Grandma.
