Anyone else have a child who is absolutely obsessed with dinosaurs? No? Just me? Okay. Well in any case I think your child will love it when you transform the letter d into a dinosaur with our Lowercase Letter D Craft. Mine sure did! We also have a cute duck transformation for the uppercase letter d craft.
We could never get enough dinosaur books in this house, and you’ll find a healthy selection on the Letter D Book List. You might want to add some dinosaur counters or a big dinosaur floor puzzle to your fun for the week.
Sometimes you can check floor puzzles out from the library, and it’s definitely worth asking the librarian. Even if it’s not an option now, librarians place orders based on what people ask for. So if you have a particular book or item you want, always ask. If you are super energetic, you might even enjoy making one or two of these dinosaur snacks.
When a theme is really special for my child, sometimes I like to go all out and do all the things. I don’t think we need to be extravagant every single week of the school year, we’d all burn out fast. But once in a while, for something like dinosaurs, it’s okay to go the extra mile.
Still, I want to remind everyone not to get guilt trippy. Moms, you have enough guilt built into your job without adding more when you can’t do all the things you think Sarah and Jenny do. The truth is none of us gets it all done all the time! It might be your season to give your child apple slices from the McDonald’s drive-thru for snack time and move on with your life. Do it.
Here’s an idea. If you have a little extra time, take your kids around the house on a letter d scavenger hunt before you end up at the dining room table. Look for items that start with the letter d in several rooms of your house. Doll, door, diapers, and dirt are a few things to look for if you get stuck.
Once you’ve got everyone at the table, spend a few minutes looking around the room for things that begin with the letter d. In the dining room? That’s perfect! Dining room, dining table, and dining chairs all start with d. Dog starts with d, so if you have one point that out. Daylight starts with d and so does dust, just to name a couple.
After craft time is over, it’s the perfect time to stretch your legs and have a family dance party in the living room. Dancing starts with D, be sure to point that out. Put on some groovy music and dance together. Dancing is exercise, giggles, and bonding time all rolled into one. Plus, it wears out your kids before nap time so that’s a win-win.
Here are the pieces that will need to be cut, which are described in the directions below. Don’t forget to let your child do as much of the cutting as possible. This visual might be helpful for your child if he or she is having trouble understanding the directions. It might also help if you draw the items that need to be cut out to give your child an outline.
One last thing you can do for the letter d. Draw. I can see my dining room table from anywhere in my kitchen so I have often settled the kids at the table with paper and crayons or paper and pencil and suggested they draw while I make dinner. If your kids will draw, cut, paste, and create for hours on their own, it will give you many hours of quiet over the next few years. You can help make this a habit by giving your children free access to paper, pencils, crayons, and craft supplies while you make dinner.
