The letter X is probably the trickiest letter to teach in the alphabet. It’s easy to memorize the shape of letter X, but finding words to demonstrate the sound of X is more difficult. Our list of Letter X Books for Preschool includes picture books with words that start with X and words that end with X.
The list also covers both sounds of X, since X at the beginning of a word often makes the Z sound. Pick and choose books based on what your child is ready to learn. Ending sounds can be much harder to focus on, but with selection so limited it’s one of the best ways to introduce this particular letter.
If your child isn’t ready to isolate the ending sound in Fox or Box, just start small. Read one or two books with X at the beginning. Add new information only as they are ready for it. That’s part of what makes this a little tricky.
These books feature the word X-Ray which is the traditional sound of X at the beginning of a word.
