Working on the letter W can be tricky for kids because it looks so similar to U and V and even M. When your child is ready to learn the letter W, use our list of letter W books for preschool to introduce the letter and jumpstart the process.
These letter W picture books help kids learn the shape and sound of the letter while engaging them in wonderful stories. Spend a little time each day reading one of the books on this list. Highlight the letter on the cover page and emphasize the sound a few times, asking your child to repeat the sound with you.

Wiggling Worms at Work by Wendy Pfeffer. A Read and Find Out About Science book with lots of details for the inquisitive preschooler. Read the first sentence on each page with children who aren’t ready for this level of detail.
This is a Book to Read With a Worm by Jodi Wheeler-Toppen. Find out which end is which and whether or not worms noise in this handbook on how to catch and study a worm in real life.
Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. A childhood favorite classic, where Max behaves terribly, then dreams a terrible dream and returns from dreamland to a welcoming home.
Warning! Do NOT Open This Book! by Adam Lehrhaupt. This is one of those books your kids will ask for over and over again. It’s hilarious and engaging at the same time. Any description of the book would be a spoiler. It’s a must-read.
The Kid Who Changed the World by Andy Andrews. The message of this book is “you can change the world” and the evidence is presented from the lives of a scientist, an orphan (George Washington Carver), and a president of the United States. I love this picture book based on a true story and the concept of the butterfly effect.
Summertime in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder. An abridged picture book from the beloved series, this delightfully illustrated book will warm the hearts of young and old alike.
The Wolf, the Duck, and the Mouse by Mac Barnett. A mouse gets swallowed by a wolf and meets a duck in the wolf’s stomach. What happens after that is the reason the wolf howls at the moon to this day.
The Eyes of Grey Wolf by Jonathan London. A simple introduction to the life of a wolf with science woven into the wolf’s story.

One Watermelon Seed by Celia Lottridge. A simple garden counting book, where two kids have a garden and the reader follows along with its progress. This book teaches more than meets the eye.
The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzolli. When the alligator’s greatest fear is realized and he swallows a watermelon seed, what will become of him? His crazy imagination will delight readers of all ages.
Watermelon Day by Kathi Appelt. After a very long wait, the watermelon is finally ripe enough to eat and the wait is over.
