We love reading books in this house! Reading together is one of the best bonding activities we can do with our children. Our list of letter S books for preschool is a fantastic selection of books to read when you are learning the letter s or having an s-themed week.
One thing I’ve noticed is that picture books really help get children engaged with the learning process. Any time you want your child to learn a new concept, pull out a picture book!
As you read each book, remember to emphasize the letter S sound in the keyword from the title and throughout the book as the word occurs. Point to the word in the title and on each page of the book so that your child is seeing the shapes of letters and words. Trace the letter S a few times to review the shape.
Read these books right before you complete the Uppercase Letter S Craft during your S-Themed week or whenever you need picture books about spiders.
Spiders Are Not Insects by Allan Fowler. An informative book about spiders that actually holds the attention of a preschooler. Plus the illustrations are great!
Spiders by Gail Gibbons. What I love about the Gail Gibbons picture books is the vivid illustrations. Good pictures make the facts come alive!
Aaaarrgghh, Spider! by Lydia Monks. The spider wants desperately to be the family pet, but every time he comes near one of the family members in the big old farmhouse where he lives, they scream.
The Very Busy Spider by Eric Carle. After a fierce wind takes the spider to a new location, she must build a new web inspire of the constant distraction of friends.
Bear’s Scare by Jacob Grant. Bear likes his house tidy and a messy spider’s web will not do. His hunt for the offending spider does not end as anyone expects.
I’m Trying to Love Spiders by Bethany Barton. Would you kiss a spider? Yeah. Me neither. Chock full of facts and humor, this book is a winner.
Enjoy these books with the lowercase letter S craft where your child will turn the letter S in to a slithering snake.
There’s a Snake in My School by David Williams. The headmistress is not pleased when a snake comes to school for pet sharing day. Perhaps she was right to be horrified? Not for the faint of heart.
Snakes on a Train By Kathryn Dennis. Sibilant sounds and word play make this book a reader favorite for everyone in the family.
Snake! Where? By Carrie Hyatt. An exploration of the fear of the unknown that will have kids wiggling and giggling throughout.
Snakes for Kids by Michael G. Starkey. Beautiful pictures and fascinating facts about snakes.
Snakes! by Gail Gibbons. Try reading a Gail Gibbons book one page at a time, or read just the first sentence on each page to get an overview of the topic.
Spend time starting some seeds this week and read these books.

The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle. The lifecycle of a flower is told through the eyes and adventures of one tiny seed.
Some of my favorite books are on this list!

Stone Soup by Marcia Brown. If everyone shares what little they have, the clever (and very hungry) soldiers will enjoy a wonderful soup, and so will the entire village. But how will they convince the villagers?
