Our list of letter P books for preschool will help you introduce the letter and its sound to your students with pizazz. These letter P picture books are engaging and fun to read together.
Each book has a keyword in the title that begins with the letter P. As you read the cover, point to the keyword and show how it begins with P. Say the word several times emphasizing the P sound. Then continue reading the book, occasionally emphasizing that keyword again as it occurs throughout the book.
Pigs Love Potatoes by Anika Denise. If you have enough potatoes to share with all of the pigs who stop by at dinner time, why not have a potato party?
Poppleton by Cynthia Rylant. If you need a giggle this book is for you! Poppleton is a very sincere and friendly pig, and he’s also new in town. Perfect for beginning readers or as a read-aloud.
The Three Little Pigs by James Marshall. Gorgeously illustrated by Mei Matsuoka, this twist on the classic fairy tale brings the story to life.
Piggies by Audrey and Don Wood. Witty illustrations and humorous text about the ten little piggies will delight children of all ages!
If You Give a Pig a Pancake by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond. Goodness, that is an interesting chain of events, and it all started with a simple pancake. With syrup. Kids love this series.
Pigsty by Mark Teague. What would you do if you went upstairs one day and found a pig sitting on your bed? Would it make you listen to your mother more? I’m not so sure.
The Very Sleepy Pig by John Malam. Pig is too tired to get up when the rooster crows, but then he misses out on all the morning joys of the farmyard. Until one day he decides to make a change.
These books will be perfect to read before or after you complete the uppercase letter P craft (a penguin craft) together.
If You Were a Penguin by Wendell Minor. A perfect introduction to the science of penguins for young children.
Little Penguin’s Tale by Audrey Wood. A cautionary tale told by the granny penguin. Young penguins everywhere, take note!
Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester. Tacky has some quirks, but one day those quirks that made his friends crazy come in very handy. A story about acceptance.
A Penguin Pup for Pinkerton by Steven Kellogg. Pinkerton decides to adopt a baby penguin, but things quickly get out of hand.
Pierre the Penguin: A True Story by Jean Marzollo. Pierre has begun to lose his feathers, and the scientists where he lives do not know what to do about it. This is a true story.
Where Is Home, Little Pip? by Karma Wilson. Pip is usually really good about staying close to the nest, but one day a glittery black feather takes her on a wild goose chase and she is lost.
Be Brave, Little Penguin by Giles Andreae. If you were a penguin and you were scared of the water, what would you do? A look at bravery and encouragement.
The Penguin and the Pea by Janet Pearlman. The classic tale but instead of a princess, it’s the penguin having trouble getting a good night’s sleep.
Read these books right before you make the lowercase letter P craft (a parrot craft) together.
Little Parrot Illustrated By Katie Saunders. An adorable touch and feel board book for the younger crowd.
Memoirs of a Parrot by Devin Scillian. What it’s like to be adopted from the parrot’s point of view. Will the parrot and the human come to an understanding of mutual benefit?
Introducing the Parrot by Abo Layan. The perfect book when you are about to get a parrot and want your child to know the basics of care and communication. Also, interesting for those of us with no intention of ever getting a parrot, but whose kids want to know what it’s like to have one.
If You Were a Parrot by Katherine Rawson. A simple look at the facts about parrots perfect for young children.
Pagayo: The Mischief Maker by Gerald McDermott. A very noisy parrot saves the moon from being eaten just in the nick of time.
Papa, please get the moon for me by Eric Carle. This is a great book to read with Pagayo: The Mischief Maker. In this book, a little girl wants the moon and believes her Dad will go to any lengths to bring it to her.
Pie in the Sky by Louis Ehlert. Because pies do grow on trees, this book about a cherry tree is both delightful and informative. And it includes a recipe.
Hush, Little Polar Bear by Jeff Mack. A perfect bedtime book for P week, this beautifully illustrated book takes readers on a sleepy-time magical adventure in dreamland.
Three Pebbles and a Song by Eileen Spinelli. A little mouse is confused about what he should contribute to the winter stores. What he collects is not what the other mice expect, but it sure does brighten up the long, cold days.
