Have you made any of the letter crafts yet? If you are looking for fun ways to learn the alphabet, you’ll want to check out our crafts and book lists for each letter of the alphabet! We have an uppercase craft and a lowercase craft for each letter, and each craft post also has tons of other ideas for teaching the letter shape and its sound.
So that you do not have to go looking, I’ve gathered all of our fun ways to learn the alphabet into this one post. Bookmark this one and come back to it to find the next letter whenever you are ready!
This is a great question, and the truth is there is no “one size fits all” answer. Some children know all of the letters of the alphabet by the time they are two, but that’s a little extreme. Some children don’t learn all of the different letters of the alphabet by the time they are seven or eight, and that’s a little extreme on the other end but still perfectly acceptable. Most children will fall somewhere in between those two extremes.
The bottom line is though, your child will learn the letters of the alphabet when he or she is ready. And for every kid, that’s going to be different. Pushing your little one to learn when he or she is not ready will only lead to frustration and stress. Instead, try some of these fun ways to learn the alphabet together and just see how it goes. If it’s stressful, take a break and come back to it in a couple of months. If it works, keep going.
Furthermore, learning the sound the letter makes is a more advanced skill. Most children will learn the shape of each letter before learning the sound or understanding the somewhat abstract concept that letters make sounds within words. It can take some time for that to all make sense. In the meantime, you can provide neural hooks and neural pathways for your child’s learning development just by exposing them to the concept over and over and over with fun activities like these. At some point, it will all click.
Toys are one of the best ways to encourage learning without stress! Kids need to play, and play that also exposes children to the different things they need to learn is a win for everyone. These are some of the all-time best toys for teaching the alphabet and reviewing letters as they are learned.
All of our book lists have fantastic picture books pertaining to each individual letter. It’s kinda nice to have books that cover the entire alphabet as well. These books are great for review and for the overall concept of the “alphabet”. Here are some of our favorites.
