When people find out that I teach English to Children in China they are always very confused! How on earth is that possible? Isn’t China thousands of miles away? Well yes! Yes it is! The children I teach are around 6350 miles away from my classroom! The magic of the internet and a wonderful online platform called VIPKID make it possible for me and my classroom to travel to China daily!
The leader in online learning education, VIPKID was founded in 2013 by Cindy Mi and provides one-on-one, fully immersive lessons in its online classroom. Their mission; to provide the international elementary school experience to Chinese children.
The VIPKID Classroom
VIPKID lessons are all conducted through an online platform that is accessed through VIPKID’s app. Each class is taught to 1 student only and lasts for 25mins. Pre-made teaching slides are provided with engaging learning material appropriate to the students age and English ability. Since lessons are provided there is no planning required and very minimal prep to be undertaken before each class. Classes are conducted from the comfort of your own home
VIPKID Pay
VIPKID offers a base pay for $14-20 per hour plus bonus incentives for each class taught. The more classes you teach, the greater your bonus incentives become! The average VIPKID teacher earns $16-$22 per hour after incentives. Currently I earn $21 per hour with my bonus incentives. There are also additional ways to boost your pay such as earning a $2 bonus for teaching a class booked within 24hours of it’s start time, or a $5 bonus for converting a trial student.
Requirements
VIPKID has 3 key requirements to become a teacher:
- A Bachelor’s Degree (In any field of study)
- 1 Year Teaching Experience (This does NOT need to be in a formal educational setting. It can be/include homeschooling, coaching, tutoring, mentoring etc)
- Eligibility to work in the US or Canada.
