Zebra Science Lessons

Watch a science video called Why Do Zebras Have Stripes. Another fun zebra video teaches kids all about zebras. You can also read a non-fiction book or two about zebras for a little science. This one is really cool: Zebra Family by Jane Goodall.

A Different Zebra Craft

Doing craftwork can be hard for kids because they will use fine motor skills, gross motor skills, and visual perceptual skills just to name a few. This also makes crafting incredibly good for kids, so resist the urge to think of craft time as useless busywork, and give your kids access to kid’s scissors, glue, and construction paper as much as possible. Don’t judge the final product, because perfection is not the goal. Craft time is all about working on those necessary foundational skills. Make a Zebra Finger Puppet.

Materials for the Uppercase Letter Z Craft

• black construction paper
• white construction paper
• construction paper for the background in your child’s color of choice
• googly eye
• black marker/crayon/pencil
• glue
• scissors
• alternative – white paper and crayons

Instructions for the Uppercase Letter Z Craft

1. Draw the cut pieces as shown in the image above with a thick marker and then have your child follow the remaining directions.
2. Cut out a large uppercase Z and a small petal shape for the zebra’s ear from the white paper.
3. Next, cut out  20-30 rectangles the width of your letter z from the black paper for the zebra’s stripes.
4. Then cut out 2 large rectangles, about 1” wide for the zebra’s mane from the black paper.
5. Next, glue down the uppercase Z in the middle of the backing paper.
6. Then glue down the small black rectangles all over your Z to create the zebra’s stripes. 
7. Next, make small cuts along one edge of both large rectangles for the Zebra’s mane.
8. Then glue down your 2 large rectangles, 1 along the top of your Z and one down the back of your Z, trying to keep the cuts (hair) free.
9. Next, glue down the zebra’s ear along the top of your Z.
10. Then, glue down your googly eye towards the top left of the Uppercase Z.
11. Finally, draw a mouth for your zebra with the black marker/crayon/pencil.
