Lowercase Letter K Craft for Preschool

So many options exist to teach your child each letter and its sound. Why pick a letter craft? Turning each letter into a vivid picture in the mind of your student could play a vital role in reading development. Your student will transform the letter into a kangaroo in this lowercase letter k craft for preschool. Don’t forget to do the uppercase letter k craft too.

Just doing the letter craft by itself will help, but to really make an impact on your student’s letter awareness, you should pair this activity with several different multi-sensory approaches. Multi-sensory activities engage the five senses in the learning process which helps improve information recall. Taste, touch, sight, hearing, and smell are the five senses you are targeting with these activities. Here are some great options.

Play the Kangaroo Hop

If you have plastic kangaroos or stuffed kangaroos, now would be a great time to pull them out and play a little game. Have the kangaroos hop all over the house looking for things that begin with the letter K. You might find kites, kitties, a kitchen, kits, kids (plastic baby goats), and maybe (if you have extra time) some Rice Krispies treats. You can also hide letter cards and have the kangaroo help find those.

Have a Letter K Tasting Party

Sometimes a little food is the perfect learning tool! Try some of these letter K foods together and see if you like them! Or, you could have a different letter K snack every day (for three weeks) from the items on this list! My kids are particularly fond of scooping the flesh of a Kiwi out with a spoon. You don’t even have to peel it that way! Just cut one in half and share.

Practicing the Letter K Sound

As you go throughout your day and week, find little ways to talk about the sound of the letter K. You could keep the little plastic kangaroos in the kitchen and have them help with chore time, storytime, or an afternoon nap. You could talk about the letter K sound at the grocery store, in the car, or as you walk around your neighborhood looking for the letter K on signs. Your goal is to form a strong connection between the letter shape and the letter sound.

Materials for the Lowercase Letter K Craft

Before you call your student to begin the craft time, gather up all your supplies and get them ready. You won’t need much this week! Just a bit of construction paper and some scissors and glue. Go ahead and draw the cut pieces onto the construction paper so it’s ready to go. You can also pull a few things that begin with the letter K from around your home and place them on the table to chat about as your student works. Right before you start the craft would be a perfect time to read Kangaroo, Kangaroo Where Are You? by Robyn Safarian.

• brown construction paper
• black construction paper
• construction paper for the background (Let your student pick the color.)
• googly eyes
• black marker or crayon
• glue
• scissors
• alternative – white paper and crayons

Instructions for the Lowercase Letter K Craft

1. Draw the cut pieces freehand as shown above on the correct colors of construction paper with a thick marker so that your child can cut on the lines. Then have your student follow these instructions.
2. Cut out a lowercase k, the head, the tail, and two ears from the brown paper.
3. Next, cut 2 smaller inner ears from the black paper.
4. Then glue down the lowercase k in the middle of the paper
5. Next, glue down the kangaroos head at the top of the k.
6. Then glue down the 2 brown ears on the top of the head.
7. Next, glue down the 2 black inner ears inside the brown ears.
8. Then glue down the tail on the left side of the k
9. Next, glue down the googly eyes on the kangaroos head.
10. Finally, draw a nose and mouth for your kangaroo.
