Sharing is caring!
Do you remember the first time you heard one of the Aesop’s Fables about a crafty fox? I sure do! I had one teacher in elementary school who made it her goal to read us as many of the fables as she could. Did you know there are over 28 fables which include foxes? The image of a fox being sly or deceitful has stayed with me all these years. Imagery is everything. The visual imagery of transforming the letter f into a fantastic fox will help your child build letter and sound recognition with this uppercase letter f craft.
The uppercase letter F looks very similar to the lowercase version so it tends to be very easy to learn both at the same time. Once you are finished with the uppercase letter f craft, you might want to transform the lowercase letter f into a frog. To make sure your child is associating the sound of letter f with the shape of the letter, repeat the sound several times as you craft.
If you have a whiteboard or window and dry erase markers, you can make a list together of letter f words. Your child probably isn’t ready to read those words just yet, and that’s okay! You should write them out anyway, and underline the letter f in each word as you write it.
Sound out the words together as you write each letter, and emphasize the beginning sound each time. You aren’t actually asking your child to read here – you lead the way. Your goal here is to lay the foundation for the concept that letters can be strung together to form words. This will pay off later!
If you have extra time you and your child will enjoy these fun activities involving foxes. These will give you a chance to emphasize the letter sound a few more times and remind your child about the Fox you’ve created together.
Once you are finished making the uppercase letter f craft together, make a game of sneaking through the house with Fox and find words that begin with the letter F. How many f words can you find in each room? When your child gets bored with that, ask him or her to tell you a story about the fox. Don’t forget to take a picture of the fox letter and send it to grandparents, aunts and uncles for show and tell. Kids love to see their handiwork on display.
