Letter E Books for Preschool Book List

One of the first books I remember hearing read out loud in school was The Little Engine that Could. My teacher read it with such drama and kept us glued to the pages until the end. We begged her to read it over and over. Reading books out loud is one of the best ways to make good memories with your children. Teach your child the sounds and shape of E and enjoy story time together with this list of letter e books for preschool.

You will notice I have letter e books on this list for both sound of e and the long sound of e. If your child is just learning the first letter sound, start with the short vowel sound and wait on the Emu books for now. If your child is more advanced or ready for two sounds with one letter, adding emu books is perfect for the long vowel sound.

Books about Engines for Kids

The Little Engine that Could by Watty Piper. The classic story that kept me on the edge of my seat in second grade never ceases to delight my preschool kids and keep them glued to the page as well. And what a message! I still remember the feeling of empowerment this story gave me as a young child.

The Little Fire Engine by Louis Lensky. Fireman Small becomes the hero of Tiny Town after a fire emergency where he rescues a young girls.

Thomas the Tank Engine by Rev. W. Awdry. This classic original story pre-dates the television series and is a must-read for Thomas fans.

The Way Little Engines Work by Chris Oxlade. Beautiful cutaway illustrations, labels, and descriptions of the way things work inside Thomas and Friends will keep young Thomas fans occupied for hours.

Eggs – Letter E Books for Preschool

The Extraordinary Egg by Leo Lionni. A hilarious case of mistaken identity will delight the children as much as the egg delights the frogs who find it.

Guess What is Growing Inside This Egg by Mia Posada. Each of the eggs is about to hatch, and its your job to figure out what’s inside. Visual clues will provide hints for the observant.

Egg by Kevin Henkes. Three eggs hatch, but one remains. What is going on? The birds are in for a surprise.

An Egg is Quiet by Dianna Hutts Aston. Explore the vast world of eggs in this very informative book with gorgeous illustrations.

The Goose Egg by Liz Wong. What in the world is Henrietta the elephant going to do with a goose egg and discovers the baby goose has been left behind by the herd?

Elephant Books Kids Love

The Ant and the Elephant by Bill Peet. This book has longer text, but the sweet story of an incredibly kind elephant is worth the effort for the preschool child who can listen.

Pro Tip: Give your child Legos or a fidget toy, because sitting still is not a pre-requisite for listening. Many kids (and adults) listen better if they have a little something to do with their hands.

But No Elephants by Jerry Smith. A lonely Grandma buys all the pets, but draws the line at elephants. Or does she?

The Sand Elephant by Rinna Herman. A lonely boy builds an elephant in the sand almost by magic and after he falls asleep, the magic really begins.

A Parade of Elephants by Kevin Henkes. Where are the elephants going and why? Surprise! This beautifully illustrated book is delightful to the very surprise ending and builds number sense, counting, observation, and knowledge of opposites along the way.

Mela and the Elephant by Dow Phumiruk. Mela is adventurous and spunky and quickly gets herself into trouble, but an elephant shows Mela kindness. This book won an award for 50 Best Multicultural Picture Books and is steeped in Thai traditions and language.

Just a Random Letter E Book for Preschool

Eloise by Kay Thompson. This one is in a class of it’s own. The beloved story of Eloise the impertinent six-year-old who’s antics delight children of all ages is one of the perfect letter e books for preschool kids.

Emu Preschool Books

Edward the Emu by Sheena Knowles. Edward doesn’t want to be an emu any more so he tries out the lives of other animals. By the end he realizes that being an emu is a gift.

Emu by Claire Saxby. A non-fiction book full of information about emus with quirky and fun illustrations. If you find it is too much text for your child, just read the first sentence on each page.
