Sharing is caring!
Your student will learn the shape and sound of q when they make this uppercase letter Q craft for preschool turning the letter into a colorful quilt.
Quilts are comforting and special for many people. If your child has a baby quilt it is a treasured heirloom. If a quilt is not part of your family tradition, your student might not even know what a quilt is, and that’s okay! Share this sweet craft with your child and learn all about quilts together at the same time.
If you are learning both versions of the letter at the same time, be sure to check out our lowercase letter Q craft and transform the letter Q into a queen!
Our list of Letter Q Books for Preschool includes several beautiful quilt picture books you can read together. In addition to the fictional storybooks, I highly recommend the book The Quilting Bee by Gail Gibbons. In this book, you learn all about quilts, what they are and how they are made. It’s a bit of history to go with your phonics studies!
If you have a quilt in your home, or if your child has a baby quilt, this would be a great time to get those quilts out and look at them. Study how they are put together, talk about the pieces and colors. Ask interesting questions as if you are sharing a piece of beautiful artwork because you are! Read this great piece about sharing art with children to get ideas.
Look at quilts and learn more in the Kids section (online) of the International Quilt Museum. This includes coloring pages, video, and lesson plans!
Brainstorm together and list different words that begin with the Qu sound as in quilt. List one or two words yourself and then give your child time to come up with some on their own. Quill, quirky, quick, quit, are all great examples of words you can share with your child. The words they are most likely to come up with on their own are queen, quack, and quiet. And if they play video games, probably quest.
I you have extra time, a thematic snack is always fun! Here are instructions for how to make a quilt snack.
(I found this idea on Pinterest without a link or any way to credit the idea to a specific person. See the picture here.)
We have specific colors of paper recommended for this craft, but in reality you can use whatever colors of construction paper you have at home! If your child has favorite colors, let him or her pick five colors to use. This gives children a sense of autonomy and independence when they are allowed to make small but meaningful decisions.
