Since I was a tiny little girl, I have been fascinated with horses. It wasn’t just me, horses captivate children everywhere. If your child loves horses, you can use that today to inspire learning. Your child will transform an h into a horse while learning the sound and shape of the letter in this lowercase letter h craft for preschool.

When you have an unvoiced sound like the letter H, it can be tricky to teach your learner the sound. Try whispering the letter H. You do not want to say Huh, Hah, or Hi. It’s just the unvoiced sound H. Show your child How the letter H can precede many different vowels, by saying several different words. Hat. Hop. Honey. Hurt. How. Try these ideas if your child is struggling with the unvoiced sound of H.
Once the sound of the letter H is mastered well enough, challenge your child to come up with as many words that start with H as possible. Keep track by writing the words on a whiteboard or window using dry erase markers or on a piece of paper.
Your child won’t be able to read the words, but just seeing the list with h at the beginning of each word will be impactful. Take turns coming up with words if this activity is difficult. Maybe once you suggest a couple of words it will spark ideas for your child.
I love tying learning to a theme, because it really engages children when all of the different lessons being taught are tied to a theme that they enjoy. If your child enjoys horses, try a few of these activities once you’ve finished making the lowercase letter h craft.
If you have plastic horses in your toy box, this is a great time to take them out and help your child role-play. You can pretend together that the horses are learning the sound for the letter h, and have them practice making the sound. You can also have the little horses look through the toybox to find more toys that begin with the letter H.
Pro Tip: You can have plastic animals role-play all kinds of learning activities, even deep breathing to overcome big emotions.
If your child doesn’t love horses yet, maybe reading a book or two together will change that. You will find an awesome section of horse books on our list of Letter H Books for preschool.
Having your child tell stories is excellent for communication skills, pre-writing, thinking skills, and confidence. It also helps your child develop a stronger imagination. If at first, your child struggles to tell stories, you demonstrate the process and take turns. Make a mistake and back up or start over in your story so that your child knows it’s okay if the story isn’t perfect the first time. Over time your example will help children figure it out.
Activities like walking, trotting, and galloping are perfect physical activities to get your child up and moving. If you have several children, have them try horse “races” where they have to practice galloping or trotting to the finish line. This is a great activity to do before you start lessons in the morning to wake up the brain for learning, or before dinner to help everyone settle down and use up energy before bedtime. Just don’t try this right before bed because physical activity can also get your kids a little wound up.
One of the things I often tell moms is this. Don’t feel guilty for what you can’t get done. We have so much on our plates already without adding a heaping helping of guilt. If adding extra letter h and horse extension activities to your week is helpful for you, that’s great! Don’t let these ideas get you overwhelmed or down if it’s too much. If you can only do one thing to do today, read books.
